Safety measures 安全措施

Safety is a core value of the Hong Kong Speed Skating Academy.

In our skater development pyramid, the safety of our skaters and coaches is the foundation of everything else skaters develop towards. Without a foundation of safety, everything else in the pyramid falls apart and a skater would not able able to develop and progress to his/her full potential.

We aim to protect the safety of our skaters with the following measures:
1) Partnering with ice rinks that have a NHL-standard sized or larger rink surface. Larger rink surfaces gives more room for skaters to build up speed but also more space and added time for skaters to protect themselves in the case of a fall.
2) Ensuring Learn to Speed Skate classes have a set of safety padding along the corner walls of the rink to protect skaters from impact.
3) Ensuring Learn to Speed Skate classes are held on a Short Track Speed Skating standard 111.12m track. A standard track reduces skating pattern variation and hence reduces the chances of skater contact or falls.
4) Ensuring that all Interest Class participants and Foundations class participants. are equipped with necessary safety resources. Participants will each be provided with a skating helmet and a pair of cut-resistant gloves. Participants will also be given a detailed safety presentation (including how to protect yourself from a fall, how to stand after a fall etc.) before each class.
5) Ensuring that all regular Learn to Speed Skate participants are equipped with necessary protective gear: cut-resistant gloves, cut-resistant neck guard, short-track-specific helmet, full-body skin suit, and standard short track speed skates.
